How to Design a Custom LEGO® Compatible Wall Plate

Want a custom light switch cover that kids can build on? Our design-your-own LEGO® compatible wall plate lets you pick the plate, choose one or two colors, and watch a 3D preview update as you go. This guide covers every plate type, how to choose colors that look great, and how to install your new switch plate or outlet cover in about five minutes.

Step 1: Pick your plate type

Look at the switch or outlet you're covering and count the openings. Here's what each plate fits:

Toggle or decora? A toggle switch is the classic little lever that flips up and down. A decora (or "rocker") switch is a wide, flat paddle you press. Decorator outlets and GFCI outlets (the ones with test and reset buttons, common in kitchens and bathrooms) use the same rectangular decora opening.

Step 2: One color or two?

A one-color plate is a single solid color, studs and all. A two-color plate gives the plate one color and the studs another, which makes the brick pattern pop. Single plates start at $7.95 in one color and $10.95 in two.

Pick from more than 70 colors in six finishes:

• Basic: bright, glossy classics like Red, Sunflower Yellow, Cobalt Blue and Bright Green
• Matte: soft, modern shades like Matte Sakura Pink, Matte Sky Blue and Matte Charcoal
• Metallic: Iridium Gold, Copper Brown, Cobalt Blue, Oxide Green and Iron Gray
• Sparkle: glittery Classic Gold, Crimson Red, Royal Purple, Alpine Green, Slate Gray and Onyx Black
• Galaxy: deep colors with a shimmer, like Purple Galaxy and Nebulae Galaxy
• Marble: stone looks in White Marble and Red Granite

Color combinations we love

• Classic brick: Red plate, Sunflower Yellow studs
• Modern neutral: Matte Bone White plate, Matte Charcoal studs. It disappears on a white wall until someone builds on it.
• Soft nursery: Matte Sakura Pink plate, Matte Ivory White studs
• Baby blue: Matte Ice Blue plate, Jade White studs
• Space explorer: Purple Galaxy (Blue Shimmer), one color
• Jungle and dinosaurs: Matte Grass Green plate, Matte Desert Tan studs
• Treasure chest: Onyx Black Sparkle plate, Classic Gold Sparkle studs
• Construction zone: Sunflower Yellow plate, Black studs
• Superhero: Cobalt Blue plate, Red studs
• Farmhouse: White Marble, one color

Tip: match the plate color to your wall and make the studs the accent. The plate blends in and the studs look like a pattern.

Step 3: Doing a whole room? Get a room pack

Most bedrooms have one light switch and several outlets. Our room packs cover a whole room in one color scheme for 15% less than buying the plates separately:

Step 4: Install your new switch plate

Swapping a wall plate is one of the easiest home projects there is. You only need a screwdriver.

1. Turn off the power to the switch or outlet at the breaker. It's quick and it's the safe way to do it.
2. Remove the old plate. Unscrew the screws and set them aside. Screws aren't included with our plates, so you'll reuse these.
3. Line up the new plate over the switch or outlet. The curved back edges are shaped to sit flush against the wall with no gaps.
4. Screw it in snugly, but don't overtighten. Stop as soon as the plate sits flat.
5. Turn the power back on and start building.

On outlet covers, keep builds away from the openings so plugs go in and out easily.

Frequently asked questions

Do real LEGO® bricks fit?

Yes. The studs are made to fit standard LEGO® bricks, plates and minifigures, so builds snap on and stay put.

Does the plate look like plastic toy parts?

The face is ironed smooth, so it has a clean, polished look instead of a rough, textured one. Matte colors look especially at home in a finished room.

Will the colors match the preview?

The 3D preview uses each color's official manufacturer color values, so it's a close match. Every screen shows color a little differently, though.

Can I get each plate in a pack in a different color?

A room pack is one color scheme across all five plates. For mixed colors, order single plates in each color you want.
